The national park system has long understood the importance of artists to its existence. For over a century poets, writers, photographers and painters have captured some of our most memorable park vistas, and in many cases have contributed to their establishment and preservation. Each year, Everglades National Park has openings for 3-6 artists to live in the park for up to one month at a time while working to maintain this tradition.
The Artist in Residency program is not for everyone, but is designed to provide an opportunity to those who care about the environment and want to contribute as well as benefit from it. According to Garrish, she would like “to build a body of important work that will help the public understand these delicate ecosystems by capturing the complexity of them in my paintings.”
Garrish came to be an artist later in life than some, but with an enthusiasm that more than compensated for lost time. In her prior life as an ENT surgeon, she developed the self-discipline for long hours and for hard work. As she evolved into a full time artist, Garrish has applied herself diligently to the learning and love of painting.
Known for her spectacular marsh and seascape paintings, Garrish has gained a national reputation as one of today’s contemporary representational landscape painters. Her works can be found in galleries throughout the east coast and in several corporate collections. She is currently Vice President/Show Chairman of the American Impressionist Society and is the Keynote Artist for this year’s Nomadas Del Artes exhibition opening April 9th in Dallas, TX at Southwest Gallery.
